The deviations from the book have the interwebz exulting or yelling blue murder, but I think it's ok as long as you see the show as completely separate from the book - it's also more fun to have something new to think (read: gripe) about, especially if you lost a few weeks drowned in the books. (I wonder how involved GRR is in the writing of the show?)
My major gripe is Dany -- as cute as that defiant look is, her demands come off as more and more delusional. Like she's been hit by that crazy Targaryen streak. But I guess that's the prerogative of the high-born. Qarth is not good for her, and I'm not just talking about that absurd girdle she's wearing. (Also is her hair really Targaryen silver? I'm a bit disappointed.)
Visually, the despair of the taking of Winterfell hasn't quite hit me yet, but the lack of despair has been a common feeling across the show. Not even Harrenhall looked as dreadful and ghostly as it seemed, other than that first shot. Arya and Tywin are killing it.
And is it just me, or is Theon less cruel than in the books -- or even how he was pre his ill-fated homecoming? I guess getting outed after he molested his sister was a real slap in the face - this "conscience" of his is definitely new. Not sure if I like it. I wish he were more power-mad, not just a whiny kid wanting to be cool.
Nice casting with Ygritte! Poor little Jon Snow doesn't know what's hit him. I knew he needed some of that manic pixie dream girl love to stop with all that pouting.
That saucy, upward stare has got to be the look of the episode, though it didn't always get the "ladies" what they wanted (sorry Dany). Oh but obviously the most potent power the women have is sex -- or the promise of it. Welcome to the middle ages, ladies. No one said GRR was a feminist.
